The Dinner Garden

TDG Update!

In March 2010, we helped 7,335 families, 39 community gardens, and supplied seeds to 4 families through our Five Dollars Feeds a Family Program.

Since we started in January 2009, we have helped a total of 48,000 families and helped start 120 community gardens.

We have 32,000 families in queue now who have requested seeds. We need $1.72 for each request, for a total of $55,000 to complete these requests.

One in Six

One in six Americans goes hungry every day. Imagine if we had one garden growing for every hungry person in America.

We could end hunger permanently!
.
Think it's impossible? In World War II, we grew one Victory Garden for every seven Americans.

In the fight against hunger, surely we can grow one garden for every six Americans.

Gardening Info

We have a new page on seed saving at www.dinnergarden.org/ seedSaving.html Seed saving is a great way to continue your garden year after year for free!

You can also save many seeds from the produce you buy at the grocery store.

We just purchased an Early Silver Line Melon from a Korean market. From one melon, we now have 50 seeds!

Each seed will grow 10 to 15 melons, so in one growing season, we will have enough seeds for over 5,000 families!

New Recipes

We have some new food preservation recipes from a Master Food Preserver, including Pickled Dill Beans and Marinated Peppers. You can find them on our Preservation Recipes page.

Those huge envelopes!

If you've received seeds from us this year, you've probably wondered about the huge envelopes we use. We ship in those envelopes to protect the seeds from being crushed by the machines the Post Office uses to sort small envelopes.

This envelope type also gets a cheaper postage rate than a small padded envelope. Unfortunately, the postage rate is double the rate we get with small regular envelopes!
