October 2009 Newsletter
Please forward our newsletter to all your friends! We want everyone to know that the solution to hunger is in our own backyards!
New Video!
We created our first promotional video. Go to The Dinner Garden Promotional Video to view it!
Project Status
Our Seeds for School Kids program has sent seed packs to 5,500 of the 25,000 Arkansas school kids who only eat when they get a free meal at school. We need $4,875 to finish
funding this project. Can you help donate? Go to Seeds for School Kids to contribute.
Where have we been?
We have been giving out seed packs at events all around San Antonio. We have also been sending them around the country! Our count is currently over 14,000 seed packs in 42
states! Last week we sent 18 $5 Feeds a Family Seed Packs to South Carolina, so families getting Habitat for Humanity homes will be able to grow enough produce to feed a
family of 7 for a year.
In the Media
Read this great article about us: They Don't Have to
Justify Need. We sent some seeds to these folks recently for a community garden. We're happy for the exposure!
Joyfully Jobless has a little write up about The Dinner Garden!
Dinner Garden Executive Director, Holly Hirshberg, was interviewed by The Get Inspired Project. When asked how she deals with problems and difficulties, Holly said, "I can
say, that didn’t work out so I’m not gonna do it anymore, or I can say you know what, that didn’t work out, but maybe that is going to put me on a path to something even better...." Check out the rest of the interview here: www.getinspiredproject.com.
New Partnership
What if we told you that you could feed 12 people for a lifetime with a $10 donation? Lao Tzu said, "Give a man to fish, feed him for a day. Teach a man to fish, feed him
for a lifetime." The Dinner Garden, World Food Garden, and Garden
Africa say, "Give a family some produce, feed them for a day. Give them fruit and vegetable seeds and the knowledge of how to grow them, and you'll feed them for a
lifetime!"
With a $10 donation, we can revolutionize the approach to breaking the cycle of hunger. Here's a look at where your U.S. tax deductible donation will go:
-
25 cents will buy a Dinner Garden seed pack for a child in need.
-
$3.78 will buy enough seeds and training for an African family of five to grow a year round, perennial, 100 square meter garden.
-
$5 will buy enough seeds and training for a U.S. family of seven to grow a year's worth of produce.
-
And 97 cents will go towards upgrading worldfoodgarden.org to provide gardening information and resources to gardeners everywhere!
Talk about return on investment! We all raise our children to eat well, because we know that their growing bodies and minds need nutrition in order to reach their full
potential. Our three organizations have come together as partners to ensure that your donation will help nourish needy children, giving them the strength and
knowledge to grow towards the sun and carry themselves and their communities out of poverty. As if that wasn't enough, you can sleep easy knowing that by giving a family the
chance to become self-reliant, you're fighting back against the huge carbon footprint created by traditional, import driven food aid.
When you contribute to this program, please memo "Gardeners Unite," so the donation gets divided as mentioned above!

Yellow Rose Award!
Governor Rick Perry of the State of Texas commissioned Holly Hirshberg a Yellow Rose of Texas under the laws of Texas on September 21, 2009 for her work
with The Dinner Garden. This award is given only through the Office of the Governor to recognize Texas women for their "significant contributions to their
communities and to Texas in the preservation of our history, the accomplishments of our present, and the building of our future." The Yellow Rose of Texas
Award was conceived during the term of Governor Allan Shivers (1949-1957).
Events
The Dinner Garden will be at Greenfest giving away seeds for fall planting on Saturday, October 10, 2009! Thanks to www.rareseeds.com for sending us seeds and handouts for our gardeners! Our table is going to be lots of fun with mini gardens to plant and
seeds to take home!
We love our friends!
The Dinner Garden has been fortunate to receive support from these businesses: Granny's
Heirloom Seeds, The Greenhouse Catalog, and The Seed Kingdom.
We have also received donations of money, postage, gardening supplies, and seeds from individuals who support our mission.
Thank you so much!

How can you help?
Please register food pantries in your neighborhood at www.ampleharvest.org. They are creating a comprehensive list of food pantries
in the USA. If you have left over garden produce, check out their website, and they will tell you how to donate it to people in need.
