February 2010 Newsletter
Please forward our newsletter to all your friends! We want everyone to know that the solution to hunger is in our own
backyards!
Last year, we helped over 20,000 families grow gardens in 43 states throughout the country. We provided seeds for 23 community gardens.
We are very pleased with the impact we were able to have thanks to all our generous donors. Please read our 2009 Annual Report for
all the details of what we accomplished, our vision for this year, and our financial reports for 2009.
This year, we have been incredibly busy sending out seed packs for gardens. In January 2010, we sent seeds to over 10,000 families, half of what we
did for all of 2009! Our demand in February has been incredibly high.
We are now in all 50 states. The Dinner Garden is
supporting numerous community gardens, school programs, Head Start programs, food banks, and community programs.
We are desperate for funding to continue our mission. If you can contribute, please do so. Please share our cause with your
friends, family, neighbors, and co-workers. Tell your employers about us. Write to your representatives and senators to tell
them about us. Contact President Obama to ask him to support Dinner Gardens. With your help, we can continue to send fruit
and vegetable seeds to anyone who wants to garden!
To send one Dinner Garden Super Seed Pack to an individual, we need $1.72. That includes
ten types of fruit and vegetable seeds, postage, and packaging. When we send out our Dinner Garden Seed Packs, which contain 5 to 6 different types of seeds,
to a group or a distribution point, the cost is 30 cents per seed pack. So, when we sent 100 seed packs to the Latino Farmers Cooperative of Louisiana, it
cost us $30.
That means you can help in many different ways. If you want to donate enough for one family to receive a Dinner Garden Super Seed Pack,
donate $1.72. 10 families? $17.20. If you want to contribute so we can send 1000 Dinner Garden Seed Packs to the Arkansas Rice Depot,
donate $300.
Community Gardens
In 2010, we are expanding our efforts to include the construction of community gardens. We provided seeds and labor for a community garden
in San Antonio, Texas. We are working on a large community garden in Leon Springs, Texas. We want to see folks gardening out there! If you
are working on a community garden and need seeds, let us know. We can help! If you are in San Antonio, Texas and need support to put in a
community garden, contact Sean at sean@dinnergarden.org to talk to us about what
we can do for you!

One in Eight
One in eight Americans goes hungry every day. Imagine if we had one garden growing for every hungry person in America. We
could end hunger permanently. Think it's impossible? In World War II, we grew one Victory Garden for every seven Americans. In the fight against hunger, surely
we can grow one garden for every eight Americans.
Growing Seasons
This winter has been cold for the entire country. Here in San Antonio, we had several hard freezes. Normally, our winter
temperatures stay above 40 F degrees. So, growing winter crops has been tough. However, many vegetables are frost and even freeze hardy, so
these are the seeds we are sending out now. Dinner Gardeners are growing carrots, beets, turnips, fenugreek, cilantro,
mustard, kale, cabbage, broccoli, cauliflower, peas, lettuce, and radishes.
Later in the season, we'll send out summer favorites like
tomatoes, cucumbers, watermelons, cantaloupes, peppers, squash, and pumpkins. We are encouraging everyone to plant in as many
seasons as they can. In many parts of the country, three seasons are possible. So grow as much food as you can! We'll provide
the seeds!
